Those were the haunting words that almost sealed Ernest’s fate. A tiny newborn lamb, alone in a cage on a verandah in rural Victoria — his short life nearly ended before it had even begun.

When police arrived at the property on an unrelated call, they discovered Ernest trembling in that cage. Upon asking the farmer what he intended to do with him, the chilling reply came:

“I’m killing it later, do you want it?”

Thankfully, compassion stepped in. One kind-hearted officer couldn’t walk away. She reached out to find him a safe haven, and when we received the call at Freedom Hill Sanctuary, we knew we had to help. Our “lambulance” was quickly on the road, and that night, Ernest was carried out of the darkness and into loving arms.

At only days old, his body was weak, his spirit fragile—but there was a spark in his eyes that told us he wanted to live. Surrounded now by warmth, comfort, and care, Ernest is discovering that life can be gentle. Each day he grows stronger, learning to trust and to play, finding safety in the kindness that saved him.
